But despite her success the model, who claimed she was abused by her father and raped by numerous men - including model agency executives and Prince Albert of Monaco in her teens - fought an ongoing battle with depression. And in 2002, Karen was taken into hospital in Paris for five months after a failed suicide attempt.

Still got it: Karen Mulder, 44, showed off the figure that once commanded up to £10,000 a day on modelling assignments
At the time, a source at Ms Mulder's former agency, Premier Model Management, said news of the overdose came as an 'incredible shock.'
Fast forward 10 years though and it looks as though Karen Mulder is back to her best.
Still got it: Karen Mulder, 44, showed off the figure that once commanded up to £10,000 a day on modelling assignments
The former supermodel was on holiday at the Club 55 resort on Pampelona beach on the Greek island of Mykonos along with some friends and her six year old daughter Anna.
Looking incredibly toned in her black bikini, it was clear that Karen is still in possession of the sort of slim, athletic figure that saw her signed up as a Victoria's Secret Angel in 1999.
Slender: Karen's enviable figure landed her contracts in the Nineties with Guess and Victoria's Secret, among others
She was holidaying with friends on the Greek island, and looked happy as she waded in the warm water.
Such calm has been hard won for the model, who has suffered a tumultuous time since rising to fame alongside Naomi Campbell and her fellow suppers in the Nineties.
Mulder entered the modelling industry age 15 when she won the Elite Model of the Year contest in 1985 after a friend entered her photos.
She soon saw her career go stratospheric, and before her 18th birthday had walked the runway for Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, Lanvin, Versace, and Armani.
Her first Vogue cover followed soon afterwards, and she was signed up as the face of Guess in 1991 aged 21.
She has dipped her toe into the world of music too, releasing a number of records in 2002 that failed to set the world alight. Friends close to the star say her lack of success in this area may have contributed to her suicide attempt that year.
Where relationships are concerned, Mulder has not found great success. There was a short-lived marriage at the age of 18 to French photographer Rene Bosne, followed by a two-year-long engagement in 1993 to Jean-Yves Le Fur, whom she met in a Paris airport.
She had a daughter, Anna, in 2006 - the father's identity was not widely known - and in July 2007 she returned to the catwalk at the Dior Autumn/Winter 07/08 Couture Collection in Paris, modelling alongside Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Helena Christensen, Amber Valletta, Shalom Harlow, and Stella Tennant.
Apart from a handful of projects, Mulder kept a low profile for most of the Noughties - until an incident in 1999 that reached the papers, where she was accused of attacking her plastic surgeon after reportedly asking for a previous operation to be reversed.
